In 1911, King George V and Mary Teck were crowned Emperor of India and Empress Consort, at a coronation function in New, Delhi, present national capital of India. Following the coronation, India's capital was shifted from Calcutta to New Delhi.
Meanwhile, across the globe in the United States of America, an entrepreneur named William Durant had joined hands with Swiss racing driver Louis Chevrolet to setup a car manufacturing company that would bear the Swiss driver's name - Chevrolet. While the British Empire would disintegrate over the next few decades, Chevrolet cars would grow from strength to strength and spread their magic across the globe, including India.
The Name Behind The Name
Chevrolet was co - founded by Louis Chevrolet and William C Durant.
Louis Chevrolet was race - car driver, born on December 25, 1878, in La Chaux de Fonds, Switzerland. William Durant, founder of General Motors, had been forced out of GM in 1910 and wanted to use Louis Chevrolet's designs to rebuild his own reputation as a force in the automobile industry. As head of Buick Motor Company,, prior to founding General Motors, Durant had hired Chevrolet to drive Buicks in promotional races.
The first Chevrolet to come off the line at a new factory in Detroit in 1912 was the Chevrolet Classic Six.

But Durant was quick to realize that if he was to develop his company, he needed to build cheaper cars that he could sell in higher volumes. Louis Chevrolet was adamant that his name should only appear on luxury vehicles. Chevrolet quit, selling his stock in the company, and went on to form the Frontenac Motor Corporation. Chevrolet died due to illness.
While Louis Chevrolet may have spent just two years working with William Durant, the company he gave his name to has lasted almost a century and has become one of the best known nameplates in the automobile world.
